Float Trips on Bryant Creek

The following work was produced in May, 2001 by Ava 7th Grade Language Arts classes, Donna Sherman, teacher. The students looked at the page on Boating/Floating in the Outdoor Activities section as background material. Their assignment: Picture yourself and some friends having a great time on a float trip on Bryant Creek.

Our Floating Trip

By Justin Coonce

Next Saturday we are going on a floating trip. I'm pretty excited because two of my friends are going with me and I can imagine all the fun things we are going to be doing. The float is about 5 or 6 hours long, but we are going to be doing a lot of fishing and swimming, so it will take 7 or 8 hours.

The last couple of days, all I could think about was our floating trip. My two friends Zac and Chance have been preparing for our trip also by buying supplies and food. Mainly all they are buying is cooking oil, salt, soda, and potato chips, because everything else we are going to be eating is what we catch while we are fishing. We went to Wal-Mart yesterday because we had to have some pots, pans, and other containers.

It's Saturday morning now and we have arranged for our parents to pick us up at our ending place. After we placed our equipment in the canoe so it balanced, we were ready to take off.  As we went along down the stream slowly, I noticed a deep hole of water and started fishing. Zac and Chance started fishing along with me, and in just a little bit we had seven fish.  When we finished fishing, we started down the creek again.

All of a sudden there was a really swift bend in the water ahead of us. We started slowing down and stayed close to the opposite bank so we wouldn't hit the trees that were on that side. We made the turn perfectly, which was a relief! A little way down the creek, we went swimming where there was a little bluff sticking out over the water.

When we got to our stopping place, our parents were waiting for us. We told them about all the fun we had along the way, and about how we made that perfect turn on that really hard turn. That night I talked to Chance and Zac, and they can't wait until our next floating trip!

The day that I went floating was such a beautiful day. I went over to Zac's house to pick him up. Justin was already at my house before I went to Zac's house. Then we went to go get Whitney. We were ready to go.

We took my parents Jeep so we could fit all of us in. I put all the pop in the back in the coolers and all the food that we had. I put the paddles in the boat so that they would not fly out.

When we got into the water, it was so cold because it was only June. We were floating down a little ways when we flipped it, so we went over to the bank and we stayed there the rest of the night. But we had fun!

My friends and I are going on a float trip. We are going to put in at the Monastery and take out at the Blair Bridge. Earlier on this morning, we went to the grocery store and bought all the necessities needed for our trip. We decided on bringing foods that would be easy to put together, such as tuna salad, sandwiches, fruits, fruit snacks, and soda pop.

As we were putting in at the monastery, we had a little accident (not major). Our cooler tipped out of the canoe, and landed in the water! Lucky for us, the cooler did not open, and we were able to get it back in without any food falling out. We did not have another accident after that.

We took a lot of pictures of beautiful scenery. After that, we unloaded all the things out of the canoe and loaded all the things up into our vehicles. We went to the creek out by my house and swam. So, all in all, I'd say we had a pretty good time!

My Floating Trip  With  My Friends

By Heather Nelson

Hi, my name is Heather. Some of my friends and I are going on a canoe trip. Tia and I are sharing a canoe, Heather L and Tori are sharing a canoe and Anthony and Michael are sharing a canoe. We are leaving at 10:00 a.m. We are going to put in at the Monastery. Our trip will take 5-6 hours or even more.

I just hope that I don't get sunburned! We will be taking a cooler, fishing rods, back rests, seat rests, towels, and life jackets. We have a lot of food! We have chips and dip, turkey sandwiches, and cookies. Of course we have to have candy bars like Snickers and Three Musketeers. We also have pop like Pepsi and Mountain Dew. We have three coolers, one for every canoe, and they have four sandwiches in each cooler and six pops in each cooler and however many candy bars they want. There will be two of everything else. Oh yeah, I almost forgot all about the sunscreen. There will be a whole lot of that in each canoe! The cooler will be put in between the two seats of the canoe.

I just hope that we don't tip over, but if we do, then I will remember when I come out of the water to find the canoe and swim to it. I'll hold on to it until we get to a shallow water and try to turn the canoe back over and get the cooler out of the water, too. But maybe that won't happen! I hope not, but if it does I will be prepared!

Bryant Creek

By Dana Walker

I was on a trip with my buds about July. We were floating down the creek in my Grandpa's fishing boat. Reagan, Amanda, Josh, & I were paddling down the creek when Josh pulled the plug that was supposed to drain water out when you pull it up on the bank. Dumb move. So Amanda and I turned the boat toward shore and we banked it. Turns out Josh pulled the plug out at Bell Bridge. The closest town was Gainesville.  And it was far away.

"Oh great!" I said. Amanda and Reagan echoed me. What are we going to do? It was getting dark, so we set up camp. We had all brought our own tents, but I was the only one experienced enough to set up my own tent. I laughed when Amanda had trouble with hers.

Lucky for me, I had brought some duct tape. I hoped I had some left over. I made a duct tape ball and stuck it in the drain hole. Then I taped the outside of the hole too. The next day, I got everyone into the boat and we went home. We had a great time at Bryant Creek and we were tired by the time we got home. I loved that trip and I plan to go again.

On a Float Trip

By Gary Williams

I am going on a float trip tomorrow and it should be quite fun. I am going to take some supplies with me. They are: two life jackets, a few snacks for my friend Coby Lawson and me.  We are also taking some paddles, a raft, and some water for us to drink.

We just now got into the boat and we are sailing off. We should have a lot of fun. We are going to be back in about 3 hours. So far, I have not seen too many things, but of course we just got started. I've seen some fish, a deer, a water snake, and some beautiful birds flying in the air.

An hour has now passed. So far it has been very fun. I don't really know what my friend thinks of the trip, but I think he enjoys it.

3 hours have now passed and the trip is over. We both enjoyed ourselves. I don't think I can do that again, because it was the excitement of my life. But it was pretty fun.
