The First Aeroplane Ever Seen in West Plains - 1918

The First Aeroplane Ever Seen in West Plains - 1918

Each year, Edwin Woolsey's third grade classes at Richards School complete a unit on West Plains history. The students and their teacher then work together to create a mural that illustrates a local historical event. Writing prompts are used to encourage the students to retell the historical event in creative ways.

This event was reported by the West Plains Daily Quill and was identified as an "aeroplane" at that time in our history (instead of airplane). The students wrote their own interpretations of the event.

The student stories:

The First West Plains' Aeroplane
by Brittany

Once when I was little I saw an aeroplane flying over West Plains, Missouri. My name is Brittany, an d I am 6 years old. I lived in West Plains so I got to see the plane when it flew over. The year was 1918.

There was a telephone call from my cousin at Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, telling me that the plane was coming our way. It took 30 minutes to fly from Mammoth Spring to West Plains. It was 10:00 in the morning when the plane flew over our town. Flags were flying, and the motor was roaring. It looked like it was flying on magic wings. The people were so excited they fell on the ground. The animals tried to escape because of the loud noise. One horse almost got loose but the owner stopped it. My dog, Angel, ran away to chase the plane, but we caught her. Angel is a poodle.

The aeroplane was a canva s color. The pilot in the plane was tall. He was wearing goggles. He had a scarf too. The man looked funny. He even waved the wings at us to say, "Hello!" Then flags fell from the wings that said, "The first aero plane to fly over West Plains!" The plane did a loop and left.

When the plane was out of sight, everyone went back to their homes and cried. The did not want the plane to leave. But when they saw candy falling from the sky, their crying stopped. The people were happy again. That was the story of the first aeroplane to fly over West Plains.

Once I saw an aeroplane flying over West Plains, Missouri. My name is David Crocker. I am twenty years old. I am in West Plains because I am going to college. I was riding around the square during open gym and heard a loud roar . Everybody pointed up at the aeroplane. The aviator waved down at us. He was flying very high. The strange machine was HUGE and was a creamy-yellow color.

I like automobiles and drive our black Model T Ford. I have a seventeen-year-old sister who is in her junior year of high school. My mom is forty-six and stays home. My dad is forty-eight and works at a mill in New York. I am enrolling at West Plains City College. I will be a sophomore. That's the story of the first aeroplane flight over West Plains.

The First West Plains' Aeroplane
by Damon

Once when I was little I saw an aeroplane flying over West Plains, Missouri. My name is Damon. I am six years old and live in West Plains. The year is 1918.

I was riding my bicycle in the yard when I heard a roaring noise coming up the railroad tracks. I saw a horse rear up and heard people yelling, "Look at the HUGE aeroplane!"

I saw the aviator in the plane wave at the people on the ground. He flew in a big circle around the town. On the back of the aeroplane was a flag. The yellow aeroplane had two wings. It flew over the courthouse. It took the aeroplane 30 minutes to fly from Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, to West Plains, Missouri. Then it left West Plains, Missouri, at 10:20 p.m. I thought the aeroplane was COOL!

The pilot wore goggles and a long sleeve shirt. He had dark brown hair that was short. He flew high above the trees. The aeroplane flew over the Quill on it's way out of town. The pilot flew the aeroplane right through the middle of a barn that had big, wide doors. That's my story about the West Plains' aeroplane.

My grandmother and I were sitting on the front porch when suddenly a big ROARING sound passed overhead. We did not know what it was until it turned the corner and flew over the top of the courthouse.
